NEOM: Tech-Driven Architecture

What is NEOM?

NEOM began life as an idea thought up by Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman - the current ruler of Saudi Arabia, as part of the Saudi Vision 2030 initiative, which seeks to diversify the country’s economy away from mainly oil-based. The infrastructure project itself has earmarked a large chunk of land in the country for the development of the ten separate builds that make up the NEOM region.

The project is mainly funded by the Public Investment Fund - an organisation that manages investments on behalf of the Saudi government. Additionally, the Saudi Investment Company was set up by the government to manage the creation of the project. So far, the fund claims to have earmarked $500 billion for the entire region

The name of the project is made up of two components. 'NEO' from the Greek alphabet prefix meaning 'new', and the 'M' standing for the Arabic word 'Mustaqbal', meaning 'future'.

While we recognise the separate controversies related to the NEOM project, this article will focus purely on the technology set to be used at NEOM, as well as technical challenges to implementation these may face.
