Cloud Computing

What Does Cloud Look Like?

Modern Cloud Computing infrastructure comes in three main forms: Public, Private, and Hybrid.

Public Cloud Architecture—Utilises cloud computing resources alongside hardware which are both owned and operated by a third party. Public cloud can be a good choice for software devs, as it enables scaling of resources without a large initial investment in hardware and software. However, users should keep in mind that what is available to them in a public cloud will also be available to competitors.

Private Cloud Architecture—A private cloud system is often owned and hosted by a private organisation via on-premise means. This enables almost total control over computing resources and security, but it is much more expensive than a public cloud and requires a dedicated IT function to maintain.

Hybrid Cloud Architecture—by utilising elements of both public and private cloud architecture, hybrid cloud models enable executives to move workloads between both systems. This is easily the most flexible form of cloud computing and arguably the most popular at the moment. Large enterprises that wish to remain in full control of their data frequently utilise hybrid cloud models in order to access more public-facing services as well. In addition to the hybrid model, multi-cloud offerings, where organisations use different services from various cloud providers, are becoming more popular as well.
